HANG Rhapsody: Journey into Living Art (World Premiere)
Directed by Laura Inserra

Performed by West Coast HANG players and DANCE MONKS
HANG Rhapsody is a site-specific performance that will be held as part of a series of yearly Cave Concerts organized by the GREEN MUSIC NETWORK (GMN). SAMAVESHA, in partnership with GMN, features the West Coast's top HANG players and DANCE MONKS in creating this extraordinary event of music, dance and light inside the Hawk Hill Tunnel. In this stunning location, they will create a resonant chamber of suspended time and space where the audience is completely immersed in the sound. HANG Rhapsody is dedicated entirely to the HANG. The HANG is the new instrument of this Millennium, captivating musicians and listeners worldwide. It was created in 2000 in Switzerland by Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer of the PANArt Company and is a resonating percussion instrument related to the Steeldrum, Gong, Gamelan and Ghatam. The sound of the HANG evokes an exquisite and delicate inner landscape of spaciousness and vitality. In the Bernese language ‘hang’ means ‘hand’ and the HANG is made, tuned and played by hand. The timeless resonance of the HANG will pulse in concert with the earth for a sublime expression of sound and movement.
Performed by West Coast HANG players ensemble musicians: Laura Inserra, Alan Tower, Yogi Hendlin, Aharon Wheels Bolsta, Evan Fraser, Tina Blaine and Jessica Styler.
Dancers: Mirah Moriarty, Rodrigo Esteva, Leah Rybolt, Melecio Estrella, Olivia Eng and Christine Bonansea.
The Collaborators:
SAMAVESHA
SAMAVESHA is based in the Bay area and was established in 2003 by Laura Inserra (ITALY). Inserra recently moved to the Bay area from Rome and has performed internationally in some of the most prestigious festivals and theaters of Italy and the United States as a soloist and with other renowned musicians and collaborators including at: The Colosseum (Rome), Auditorium Parco della Musica (Rome), Teatro Olimpico (Rome), The Chapel of the Chimes (Oakland), CounterPULSE (SF), NOHSpace (SF), among numerous others. SAMAVESHA productions involve diverse artists and performers from around the globe. The concept of SAMAVESHA is to unite in one time and space different artistic expressions and to create an occasion for both performer and audience to immerse themselves in that which is being created. There are typically a minimum of three art forms invoked in a SAMAVESHA performance, eliciting as many of the senses and sense gates as possible. In this experientially-based expression, the classical definition of art forms are extended beyond music, dance performance, visual art, to include expressions such as food, costumes, sacred adornments, craftsmanship or even everyday actions. SAMAVESHA produces site-specific works for an active interaction with the world we live in.
"Laura Inserra, the founder and artistic director of SAMAVESHA, is a gifted musician who utilizes multiple musical and performance skills. A native of Sicily, her work in Italy is well-known, including integral participation in the composition of numerous movie scores and the artistic direction of innovative live productions."
- Elizabeth Fisher, Writer and editor based in San Francisco.
GREEN MUSIC NETWORK
GREEN MUSIC NETWORK is based in the Bay area and was established by Alan Tower. They create and share direct experiences of natural resonance for shifts in consciousness. They offer a series of concerts and events as an expression of their mission for creating a resonant community. These events are in Hawk Hill Tunnel and at the homes of hosts and Yoga Studios who connect with their mission. Concerts are titled: Cave Concerts, Kirtan Community, Natural Resonance Concerts. They have developed a “SoundWorld” meditation form to facilitate and support peoples experiences. What does the “Green” in GMN mean? Green represents sound and music based on nature’s patterns of resonance. Green represents acoustic sound, as the sound of nature is acoustic. A world culture in which our human footprint is resonant with the earth comes into view through a transformation in consciousness. So they play with resonance as one of many tools of transformation coming into play around the globe in this most fascinating time. They promote green economy and energy awareness through articulation of green music principles. They investigate resonance based music & sound as an expression of quantum physics and the new biology while functioning within Newtonian physics (wave forms). They seek connection and collaboration with Ken Wilber’s Integral Theory movement – viewing resonance based sound and music as contributing to a balance of the 4 quadrants.
DANCE MONKS
DANCE MONKS is newly based in the Bay area and was established in 1999 by Co-Directors Rodrigo Esteva(Mexico) and Mirah Kellc Moriarty (US). They recently moved to the area from Mexico City and have performed internationally in some of the most prestigious festivals and theaters of the United States and Mexico as a duet and with other renowned companies including at The Joyce Theater NY, The Kennedy Center DC, Flynn Center for the Performing Arts VT, Studio 303 Montreal, among numerous others. Esteva is currently a guest artist with Axis Dance Company (Oakland) and both Rodrigo and Mirah performed with the world renowned Pearson/Widrig Dance Theater Company out of New York City for several years. DANCE MONKS thrives on the creation and performance of experimental dance-art that awakens cross cultural connections and explores the intimate relationship between people and nature. DANCE MONKS has been the recipient of the Zellerbach Family Fund grants, as well as grants from National Endowment for the Arts (Mexico), Canadian Arts Council (Studio303 Montreal), The Open Circle Foundation (East Bay), among others.
"Mirah's dancing and performing has always been whole hearted, technically virtuosic, and steeped in joyous and generous lyricism." Pearson, Director of internationally acclaimed Pearson/Widrig Dance Theater, New York City.
"Rodrigo's playful gentle spirit, his compassionate heart, insightful mind, and his marvelous creative dancing are all elements that make him an artist of extraordinary caliber in the dance field." Widrig, PWDT, NYC.
The venue:
Hawk Hill Tunnel - Conzelman Road, Sausalito, CA
Hawk Hill Tunnel is located in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA). It is part of the Marin Headlands, on a bluff overlooking the Golden Gate with breath-taking views of San Francisco and the pacific ocean. The Tunnel was designed during World War II as the future home of guns. The earthworks that crown the unfinished fortifications now serve as the site of wildlife observation and annual bird counts. The Tunnel itself offers incredible resonance and is sealed off on one end by the event crew. This transforms the Tunnel into a Cave for the event. This event is made possible with permits through GGNRA.
