Samavesha presents a Cave Concert Experience with South East Asia’s sounds and dance by Gamelan Sekar Jaya, Ni Ketut Arini, Laura Inserra, Alyssa DeCaro, and Gamelan X members Dan Bales, Lydia Martin and Daniel Yasmin. Artistic direction by Laura Inserra.
The performances will take place on May 18th, 2013 at 9:30 pm, inside the Hawk Hill Tunnel, a truly unique and immersive location nestled in the beautiful Marin Headlands in Sausalito, California, held with the permission of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA).

About the Cave Concert and the Hawk Hill Tunnel
This event marks the 11th annual Cave Concert, offering the public yet another magical sonic experience inside the Hawk Hill Tunnel. The tunnel is located on a bluff overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, providing breathtaking views of San Francisco and the Pacific Ocean. The tunnel itself was designed during World War II as an arms locker, but it has never been used for war purposes. It was later converted into a wildlife observation site where annual bird counts are held. For the concert, one end of the tunnel is sealed off, transforming it into an incredibly resonant cave. With artistic direction by Laura Inserra and lighting designed by John Coveney this Cave Concert promises to be a truly enchanting visual and sonic experience.
About the Artists
Laura Inserra is a vibrant and talented composer, multi-instrumentalist, teacher and artistic director. She is a classically trained musician with a strong background in improvisation and minimalist music. A native of Sicily, her work in Italy is well-known, including integral participation in the composition of numerous movie scores and the artistic direction of innovative live productions. An internationally acclaimed Hang player, Laura has collaborated with various artists globally. The Hang has been dubbed as "the new instrument of this Millennium". Her performances display ancient and modern instruments and are infused with a unique blend of musical inspiration and melodic harmonies which deeply resonate with audiences worldwide. Inserra performed internationally in prestigious festivals and theaters in Italy and the US that include: The Colosseum (Rome), Auditorium Parco della Musica (Rome), Teatro Olimpico (Rome), The Chapel of the Chimes (Oakland), CounterPULSE (SF), NOHSpace (SF) San Francisco City Hall, Grace Cathedral (SF) and YBCA (SF) among others. Audiences worldwide are not only mesmerized by this woman but also captivated by her virtuosity, profound musicality, and the passion that she brings on the stage.

Gamelan Sekar Jaya’s music and dance range from traditional Balinese repertoire to cutting-edge compositions. The sixty plus company of musicians and dancers of GSJ play on several sets of Balinese instruments, consisting of various combinations of bronze-keyed metallophones, bamboo marimbas, gongs, drums, and flutes. Gamelan Sekar Jaya is the only foreign group to ever receive the Dharma Kusuma, Bali's highest award for artistic achievement. The company is renowned for its exploration of traditional and modern forms through long-term residencies with Bali's finest musicians and dancers. Formed in 1979, the orchestra has performed in various settings and venues from the bustling village squares in Bali to the famed Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

Ni Ketut Arini (
GSJ Guest Dance Director), recent recipient of the prestigious "Predikat Maestro" award, is one of Bali’s most well-known and well-loved performing artists, and an expert on classical Balinese female style dance. She has played a central role in the evolution of twentieth century Balinese dance. For many years, she was a senior faculty member at the National High School for the Performing Arts, and now runs a dance school in Denpasar with hundreds of young dance students. She appears frequently on Balinese television in demonstrations and explanations of various dance styles. As a performer, her riveting interpretations kebyar works such as Taruna Jaya and Margapati won her top prizes and widespread recognition. She is also a preeminent performer in classical styles, including legong and arja. She has created many works based on Balinese mythology and folklore, such as the award-winning Legong Subraba Duta. Beyond these achievements, Ibu Arini is an artist whose unquestioned mastery of dance & passionate love of her art has made her a guiding light to thousands of dancers and other artists throughout Bali.

I Made Subandi (
GSJ Guest Music Director) is one of Bali's most internationally recognized modern composers. Known for his love of experimentation, he is in high demand internationally for his innovative compositions. He is a graduate of Bali’s National Institute of the Arts (STSI Denpasar) & has taught for many years at the Indonesian Academy of Performing Arts (SMKI) in Bali. He has joined GSJ a number of times as a performer & Guest Director, & has composed beautiful works for the group. Aside from frequent performances throughout Bali, he has accompanied renowned shadow-master I Wayan Wija on tours to Australia and Japan. In 1997, he performed in the Ramayana dance drama in secular and religious festivals in India, bringing an expression of Bali’s unique version of Hindu culture back to India.

Alyssa DeCaro is an international teacher, performer, percussionist, vocalist, and tap dancer. She has been immersed in music and dance her entire life, and has studied with master teachers such as Babatunde Olatunji, Anna Halprin, Keith Terry, Pak Nyoman Charita, I Dewa Putu Berata, and Gede Oka Artha. She has been a performer and choreographer in Gamelan X for 7 years. In 2006, she founded BODY OF SOUND, and she teaches workshops and retreats internationally based on the notion that Rhythm, Voice and Movement are the most natural and powerful ways to communicate. Drawing its inspiration from the clove and incense scented air of Bali, Indonesia,
Gamelan X, “The Bay Area’s own Funkadelic of ethnomusicology” (SF Guardian), explores the sonic landscape of contemporary beleganjur gamelan to offer a wildly unique expression of both East and West. From the resonating sound of the gongs to the explosive drum beats and interlocking cymbals, Gamelan X remixes the ritual of a Balinese procession with a decidedly west coast twist. The ebb and flow of the energy of a performance will transport you on a journey that will take you from dancing ecstatically, through moments of reflection and wonder.

Paddy Sandino (GSJ Member Performer). Composer, Percussionist and Ethnomusicologist, Paddy Sandino has been engaged in intercultural performing arts for over two decades. His compositions have been performed in three countries, at venues such as The Asian Art Museum in San Francisco and the world famous Bali Arts Festival in Indonesia. His study of Balinese percussion and composition techniques has brought him to Indonesia numerous times, most notably for one year on a US Fulbright Fellowship in 2009 to study musicianship and regional variations of traditional Balinese music. While on the Fulbright, he also studied gamelan tuning and construction at the Drupa gamelan foundry of Buleleng. Since moving to the Bay Area, he has become a core member of the Balinese music community, performing and composing with Gamelan Sekar Jaya & Gamelan X.

Lydia Martín has over 20 years of musical experience. She received a BFA in Multi-focus Percussion from California Institute of the Arts and a MA in Music Composition from Mills College. Her recent endeavors include studying the music and dance of Indonesia along with building American Gamelan instruments that continue the legacy of Lou Harrison. Lydia is a member of several bay area ensembles such as Gamelan X, Gamelan Sekar Jaya, Gamelan Gadung Kastori, and Falkortet. She has also performed with Kid Beyond, Steven Schick, Pauline Oliveros, Christian Woolf, Thomas Buckner, John Bergamo, William Winant, David Johnson, Randy Gloss, Pak Nyoman Wenten, Alfred Ladzekpo, Ulrich Krieger, Vinny Golia, Joe La Barbara, Payton MacDonald, Pete Jarvin, and Michiko. www.jazzlyd.com
